Florida Keys Road Trip: 6 Things To Do Between Key Largo and Key West

Florida is one of those places that will always hold a special place in my heart. I lived there for nearly three years and during that time I was able to explore a good chunk of the state. One of the places I never get tired of going to is the Florida Keys. And the best way to explore these islands? Take a Florid Keys Road Trip of course! There are so many things to do between Key Largo and Key West, that you could easily spend an entire week discovering it all. But, this time around, I only had about 48 hours.

If you’re interested in reading anything else about the Keys, check out my post about things to do in Key West! There is so much going on in Key West, so if you have extra time, spend a few days down there exploring. And if you’re looking for other accommodation options, be sure to read my reviews of The Gates Hotel and Playa Largo.

How To Get There

Depending on where you’re coming from, getting to the Keys isn’t too bad. If you’re flying from the UK, like I did, British Airways flies direct from London Heathrow to Miami. From there I would suggest renting a car. If you’re coming from the states, there is always the option of flying directly into Key West. However, this can be quite expensive! So, if you’re okay with driving for several hours, I would just rent a car from Miami Airport. Plus, the drive is quite beautiful!

6 Things To Do Between Key Largo and Key West

1. Check into Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key

Florida Keys Road Trip

If you’re looking for a great place to be based during your time exploring the Florida Keys, Hawks Cay Resort is perfect. It makes sense for a Florida Keys road trip because of its central location. I’d say it’s about the halfway mark to Key West, so it’s a great place to stop.

The other great thing about Hawks Cay is that you could never run out of things to do there. Visit one of the many restaurants for a meal, swim with dolphins, go fishing, sign up for a diving trip, and more! The resort is perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends!

The hotel was recently refurbished and you can totally tell! The rooms are beautiful, the lobby is amazing, and all of the amenities are perfect for you to enjoy your holiday!

2. Enjoy A Breakfast Picnic At Bahia Honda State Park

Florida Keys Road Trip

If you do decide to stay at Hawks Cay, grab breakfast to go and continue your Florida Keys road trip. Make a pit stop at Bahia Honda State Park, which is about 30 minutes from Duck Key. It costs $8.00 to park your car (2-8 people). Once you purchase a parking pass, you’re able to use it for the entire day.

But, you could also treat Bahia Honda State Park as a picnic spot! There are picnic tables right along the ocean, making it the perfect place to take in the views while you enjoy your meal!

3. Learn About The History of Key West On The Conch Tour Train

Florida Keys Road Trip

If you’re interested in history, then you must hop on the Conch Tour Train! It’s world famous and has been running since 1958! The train is hop on/hop off, but I suggest just riding it for the full 75 minutes. During that time you’ll hear about the history of the train as well as the history of Key West. The guide/driver will point out notable homes and sights throughout your ride! You’re free to ride the train as many times on the day of your ticket. The tours run between 9 AM and 4:30 PM and cost about $30.

4. Have A Beer on Duval Street

Florida Keys Road Trip

I’ve said it before and I will say it again… you simply cannot visit Key West without enjoying a beer or frozen beverage on Duval Street. Pick a place, any place, and sit down with a cold drink and watch the people who go by. You’ll definitely see some characters stroll (or stumble) on by. If you’re hungry, grab some Conch fritters as a tasty snack.

Some notable establishments on Duval Street are Sloppy Joes, Caroline’s, and The Garden of Eden.

5. Go On An Excursion with Fury Water Adventures

Florida Keys Road Trip

The last time I was in Key West I went snorkeling with Fury. This time I went on the Island Adventure Tour. And it was awesome! We had a great captain and skipper and it was really a ton of fun. The tour departed from the marina area on Key West. From there we went to a snorkeling spot (I’ll be honest, the snorkeling was not the best). Afterward, we hopped on some paddle boards and kayaks and explored the mangroves. When that was finished we were served some food and beer. We were able to enjoy all of this while watching the sunset on our way back into Key West.

6. Grab A Bite To Eat On Key Largo

Florida Keys Road Trip

Now that your Florida Keys road trip has come to an end, it’s time to head back to the mainland. Before doing that, make a pit stop at Sundowners. Order some fresh fish and ask them to stick some coconut bread in the oven for you! Wash it all down with an ice-cold Florida beer (did you know that Florida has some of the best breweries in the USA?). Finish your meal with a fresh slice of Key Lime pie (a must while exploring the Keys).
