Norway is one of those places that you visit and you know it’s beautiful before you get there. But, when you actually step foot in the Nordic country, you are truly blown away by what it has to offer. And that’s exactly how I felt when P&O Cruises took me to the fjords in Norway to explore. The Norwegian Fjords are packed with beautiful cities to visit. So if you’re cruising through and looking for things to do in Bergen, you’ve come to the right place.

But, first things first. What can you expect out a Norwegian Fjords cruise with P&O Cruises? Well, you can expect adventure, comfort, fun, and a whole lot more than that. Spend your days at sea getting yourself acquainted with your ship and your days on land exploring new cities that take your breath away!

Eight Things To Do In Bergen, Norway

P&O Cruises offers several cruises during the summer months to the Norwegian Fjords. On one of those cruises you’ll definitely find yourself in Bergen. And if you’re lucky enough to sail there on the newest P&O ship, the Iona, you’re in for a real treat. You’ll spend your days on the ship and off having the time of your life. So, what is there to do in Bergen?

1. Sip on some Nordic gin

Head to the Oss Craft distillery to sip on some ice cold Nordic gin. Bareksten, is an award winning gin that is exported all over the world. The distillery is small, but expanding and it’s definitely worth a visit. They use all local ingredients to make their gin and you can really taste how smooth it is! Try other spirits like aquavit and absinthe while you’re there!

2. Taste local craft beer

If you’re interested in a unique experience, then you must head to the 7 Fjell bryggeri (which means seven mountains in English) for a taste of their delicious craft beer. Tour the brewery and then head to their tasting room to indulge in a few of the dozens of beers they have on offer. My favorite was the raspberry licorice sour.

3. Indulge in the most delicious meal at Cornelius on Holman Island

Who says you can’t island hop in Norway. Hop on a boat and head to Holman Island for an insanely fresh meal. Everything here is seasonal. You don’t order, you indulge in whatever is being served up for the day. Trust the chefs and waiters and waitresses there, you won’t be disappointed. *To get to Holman Island you have to take a ferry* Book ahead!

4. Explore Bergen by bike

Even though Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, you wouldn’t be able to tell. It still seems quaint, which makes it the perfect place to explore by bicycle. So if you’re looking for things to do in Bergen, hop on a bike tour and start peddling. You’ll ride pass colorful buildings, historical churches, beautiful views of the fjords and mountains, and more!

5. Dig into the freshest seafood at the fish market

If you love fresh fish, then you can’t leave Bergen without tasting all that the city has to offer. And the best place to do that is in the fish market. The new fish market can be found in Bergen market in a beautiful glass building while the old one is right next to it, and is outdoors. For a real treat, pop into the new one and head to the Fish Me stand. Order yourself a tasting platter and dig into king crab, stone crab, shrimp, and more.

6. King Crab and a View

If you’re visiting Bergen while on a cruise, you’ll only have a limited amount of time to explore the city. So why not take some time to also explore the fjords… and indulge in some king crab while you’re doing it. Hop on a king crab lunch cruise through the fjords and take in the views around you while you stuff your face with crab legs that the meat just falls off of. You will not be hungry when you leave.

7. Take in all of the views

Hop on the Floibanen funicular for the most insane views over Bergen and the fjords. Hopefully you get as lucky as I did and you have blue skies to cast a bright glow on the city. Spot the several cruise ports, cruise ships, and colorful houses that dot the Norwegian landscape.  Make sure to walk around as there is much to be explored on the mountaintop!

8. Chill out at an ice bar

If you’re looking for a unique experience while visiting Bergen, then you have to head to the Magic Ice Bar. Bundle up in cloaks lined with faux fur, put on your gloves, and grab your hat. Once you’re ready to go, walk through the door into a frozen wonderland (you’ll feel like you’re in a room in Elsa’s ice castle). Sip on Prosecco out of, you guessed it, ice glasses. Take photos on the ice throne, and hang out on faux fur throws around the ice bar.
