#Checking In: New Road Hotel

I love a good staycation. I think that exploring your own city is really important and there’s no better way to check out a different neighborhood than by checking into a local hotel. Which is what led me to the New Road Hotel in Whitechapel. I had stayed nearby in Aldgate, but never really checked out Whitechapel. The area is probably one of the most diverse in London and is definitely worth checking out. Remember, London is massive, and no matter how many areas you stay in, there is probably way more that is begging to be discovered.

And when you do start your explorations in Whitechapel, you should absolutely check into the New Road Hotel. It’s a brand new hotel and I had been dying to check it out since it opened. So when they invited me to come to stay for the night, I couldn’t say no! I was missing East London anyway, so it came at the perfect time! (I used to live in East London, but now live in Southwest!)… So, I grabbed my friend and we headed from Southwest London on a short overground ride to Whitechapel. We arrived in about twenty-five minutes and were ready to check into our hotel for the evening.

#CheckingIn: New Road Hotel

The New Road Hotel is tucked away on a side street about a five-minute walk from the Whitechapel tube station. The area is pretty hectic, but you would never know as you step inside the hotel. As soon as you enter the vibrant lobby, the sounds of the city will sink away.

The Lobby

If you follow me on social media, then you know that I love working in hotel lobbies. In fact, I find them to be some of the most productive places because you aren’t constantly being badgered to order something. And I can totally see the New Road Hotel lobby being a mecca for digital nomads and remote workers. There are several comfy couches, regular tables, and a ton of natural light — the recipe for a productive afternoon.

The Bar

The bar area is nestled in the corner of the lobby. It features a selection of spirits and beers and is the perfect place to unwind after an afternoon of exploring the city outside. The menu features classic cocktails and light bites.

Cereal Anyone?

If you want to grab a bite to eat before heading out for the day, think about stopping by the Cereal Grind, a cereal bar located in the lobby. They serve up some delicious concoctions featuring your favorite cereals. Try some of the classics:

Rice Rice Baby – Rice Krispies + White Chocolate Buttons + Mini Marshmallows + Vanilla Milk

Original Nutta – Reese’s Puffs, + Crunch Nut Clusters + Chopped Walnuts & Almond Milk

Coco Loco – Coco Pops + Chocapic + Chocolate Buttons + Maltesers + Chocolate Milk.

Mr. White’s English Chophouse

I find that it’s sometimes hard for a hotel to really get its restaurant right. With that being said, Mr. White’s English Chophouse has knocked it out of the park. Enjoy a delicious steak from the Michelin star chef and wash it down with a glass of red wine. Come hungry though, because you have to start your meal off with an appetizer — the goat cheese and beet salad is absolutely scrumptious.

Don’t forget about dessert! Try the blueberry cheesecake!

The Rooms

The New Road Hotel has several different room options from Pocket, Warehouse, and Loft. We stayed in the Warehouse room and it was great. If you’re wondering where all the light in London is, the New Road Hotel has found it and captured it. London can be a pretty gloomy city, but you won’t have to worry about feeling the grey, dark skies inside. Instead, you’ll find warehouse sized windows keeping your room bright and sunny, even on the most typical, grey London day.

My favorite part about my room was the bed. It was this massive king sized bed that fits perfectly next to the window. It was surrounded by leather trimming on three sides, giving you the opportunity to lay on it and sleep in whichever direction you wanted.

There’s a massive flat screen TV, a waterfall shower, aircon, and a little vanity area. The room is the perfect size for a crash pad in London.

Extra Features

If all of that wasn’t enough, make sure to wander around the hotel to discover some pretty cool communal areas. There’s a game room with a classic arcade game and pool table. Head to the library for a quiet place to hang out. Or take the elevator to the roof for the coolest workout space ever.

Travel Colorfully was a welcomed guest of the New Road Hotel and Mr. White’s English Chophouse.

As always, all opinions are my own.
