Travel Colorfully: Wat Pha Sorn Kaew

wat pha sorn kaew

A few weeks ago I boarded two different buses to find a beautiful temple in the hills of Petchabun. I think the pictures speak for themselves…

Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, which means “temple on a glass cliff,” can be found on the border of the Phitsanulok and Petchuban provinces. Step into a fairytale and discover the most beautiful temple that I’ve ever seen.WAT PHA SORN KAEW

And for it being one of the most beautiful places, in the entire world, that I’ve visited, it is almost completely unknown by tourists. In fact, when we visited, we were the only tourists among all Thai people.

The temple is covered with 5 million mosaic pieces made out of glass and pottery items. If you wander the ground, you’ll find a stained glass gazebo as well as several gardens. The gorgeous colors will captivate you and you’ll end up spending hours staring at all of the beautiful walls and tiled floors. Something you definitely can’t miss is the five sitting Buddha statues, which stand tall, overlooking the entire town of Khao Kho.

Getting There

If you’re coming from the north, spend the night in Phitsanulok. Take the local bus in the morning to Khao Kho. Keep in mind that you will literally be dropped off on the side of the road. So it’s important that you are paying attention during the ride. We hired a songthaew when we arrived at a 7-11 in Khao Kho for 100 baht per person (roundtrip). We were then dropped off at the temple which is on the top of a large hill.

This could easily be done in a day. We spent about two and a half hours walking around the temple and taking photographs.

Remember to dress respectfully as this is a temple. Keep your knees and shoulders covered.
