The Truth About Travel VII

things can go wrong
You might have a meltdown.

Traveling in the Mexican Yucatan is full of amazing adventures that most people dream of having! When my husband and I set out to travel this region of the world, I never expected that I would actually have a complete melt down (which NEVER happens) over a minor inconvenience.

Our trip was full of ancient Mayan ruins, jungles that echoed with the sounds of howler monkeys, and crystal clear cenotes. What could possibly be worth crying over?

About 2 weeks into our trip in this hot & humid region of Mexico, we landed in Palenque for 4 days. On our first day there, it was business as usual walking around to explore the town, finding somewhere to lay our heads while we were there, and filling our bellies with good, local food & beer.

All was going well up until the second evening in Palenque when we decided to get dressed up and go out to a nice restaurant for dinner. I showered, did my hair, put on a dress, and was ready to go. The moment I stepped outside of our hotel room, the heat & humidity made my hair start to frizz and I immediately began to sweat all over my body.

After 2 weeks of nothing but uncomfortable, sweaty days topped off with wild, unruly hair, I had had enough and just wanted to look decent for a change. I know how shallow this sounds, but I honestly just wanted one cute picture of our time there and it looked like that was never going to happen. This overwhelming feeling of frustration turned into an ugly cry episode. My completely compassionate husband consoled me for a while and proceeded to assure me that I was beautiful even with crazy hair and a sweat-soaked dress. What a guy!

Eventually, I calmed down and we had a wonderful dinner together. The meltdown was definitely not a picture perfect moment, or one that I am necessarily proud of, but in the end, I realized it wasn’t the end of the world and that everything doesn’t have to be perfect when you’re traveling. Good or bad, a story is a story and there’s always the opportunity to make tomorrow’s adventure a better one for the books.
