Plan: Picking The Right Destination

Picking the right destination

So, you know you want to go on a trip, but where do you go? Picking the right destination is so important!!

There are a few factors you must consider when picking a place to travel to. Do you only have a certain amount of days to take your trip? Can you be flexible with your arrangements? What time of year is it? Do you want to relax? Or do you want to go on an adventure? City? Mountain town? Beach?

The options are endless!

Here are the steps that I take when deciding on my next destination.

1. Browse Pinterest for some inspiration.

I like to narrow down my choices by looking at all of the beautiful photos on Pinterest. I’m a very visual person and it helps me to see different options, rather than just reading about them.

2. Does it make sense?

You probably don’t want to be in the Caribbean during Hurricane season, just like you wouldn’t want to be planning a ski trip when there won’t be any snow! Make sure you’re choosing destinations that make sense for the time of year you’re going and for the amount of time you’re headed there. If you’re traveling from America, it wouldn’t be the brightest idea to head to Australia if you only have a week to travel.

3. Research, research, research…

My friends think that I am the Queen of Research. They probably think I’m a bit excessive when it comes to researching a destination, but I think its at least important to know how to get somewhere, how far different destinations are from each other, etc. I personally like to visit more than one place during a long trip, so you want to make sure you aren’t going to have a really long travel day that essentially ends up forcing you to lose a day.

Now that you know where you want to travel to, stay tuned for my next planning post about booking a flight!

Yes! I love checking out Skycanner's "fly anywhere" feature when I'm just starting to plan a trip to see where I can go for cheap. Once I have a few places in mind, I dig into the next steps (e.g. is there snow on the mountain I'm planning to fly to for my ski weekend :)).
