Exploring Bimini Island

Bimini Island

So now that you know the hot spots around Bimini Island, it’s time for you to plan a few excursions. Every good trip is filled with more than just relaxing beach time. It’s filled with adventure and time for exploring! If you’re interested in exploring the island a bit more, you can sign up for some day trips through Resorts World Bimini. I was able to take part in two of the most popular excursions on the island: Sapona Shipwreck and Snorkel Adventure and Bimini Nature Tour (usually with a visit to the Shark Lab).

Exploring Bimini Island

Sapona Shipwreck and Snorkel Adventure

Hop on a boat and head out to the massive Sapona Shipwreck, which can be found just past South Bimini Island. The SS Sapona was a cargo ship that ran aground during a hurricane in 1926. The ship had many uses during its time. It was originally built to be used during World War I (it’s made out of concrete since steel was in short supply during the war), but was not completed until afterwards. It has been a casino, it has stored oil and it was even a warehouse for alcohol during prohibition before sinking.

Nowadays, the Sapona is a popular snorkeling and diving spot. The concrete ship is now home to several marine ecosystems, making it the perfect place to spot fish and coral.

Bimini IslandBimini Shark Lab and Nature Tour

Take a water taxi over to South Bimini to learn about the flora and fauna of the island. After stepping off of the boat, you’ll take a van to your first stop: The Fountain of Youth. You’ll receive some background information on Ponce De Leon and the famed fountain. Then, you’ll have your own chance to drink the water (I’m feeling younger already).

After that, you’ll head over to the Nature Trail. The trail is about a mile long and you’ll be able to see several different ecosystems during your hike. There are beautiful plants and trees surrounding the trail. There are also lots of spiders and crabs (don’t worry they leave you alone!).

The next part of the tour would be a visit to the Shark Lab, which we were unfortunately unable to visit.

Thank you to the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini for welcoming me as a guest on these tours. As always, opinions remain my own.
