An Island Break in Jersey, The Channel Islands

I recently had the opportunity to travel to Jersey in the Channel Islands. Now, I’ll be honest, before I went to Guernsey, Jersey was never even on my bucket list. But, after exploring Guernsey, I knew that I had to explore the largest of the Channel Islands. And I’m so glad that I did. Taking an island break in Jersey is one of the best things I’ve done in a really long time. In fact, I’d say it’s one of my favorite trips of the year.

The great thing about Jersey is that it’s a year round destination. No matter when you choose to visit, there is so much to do there and everything is absolutely beautiful. The people are extremely friendly and the food is delicious. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to book yourself an island break in Jersey.

Island Break in Jersey

I had the pleasure of visiting Jersey in November. And while there were some rain and hail showers and a loof wind, we actually lucked out with the weather. For the most part the sun was shining and the sky was blue. This made it excellent weather to explore the small island. So, you might be wondering, what exactly do I do during an island break in Jersey?

Where to Stay

First thing’s first! You need to find a place to stay. Sure, there are a ton of hotels to check into but I suggest trying a more unique experience. I checked into the Archirondel Tower, a brand new accomodation. It’s located inside of a refurbished artillerary tower that was built in the late 1700s. The Archirondel Tower is full of history (some not so great) from the 18th century through the second World War.

The tower has been beautifully redone to create a comfortable oasis for four people. It’s separated into three levels — on the ground floor is the kitchen and bathroom, the second houses the bedroom, and the third is the living room complete with a TV and wood burning stove. You can even walk up another level to the roof! Please keep in mind that there is a very narrow spiral staircase in here so if you don’t feel comfortable walking up and down it, choose a different accomodation. The Jersey Heritage website has a whole list of cool and unique places to stay!

What to See

There are so many beautiful places to see in Jersey and the best way to see them all is by car. I definitely suggest renting a car to get around the island. It’s not that big, but it will allow you the freedom to explore every corner of it! Here are a few can’t miss experiences!

La Corbiere Lighthouse

la corbiere lighthouse

One of my favorite stops during our trip was at La Corbiere Lighthouse. Located on the Southwest Coast of Jersey, this place is stunning. The panoramic view of the white lighthouse surrounded by tall rocks that have been shaped by the rough sea is incredible. I suggest heading there about an hour before sunset. It’s the perfect place to capture the sunset if you don’t care too much about walking out to the lighthouse. If you do want to walk out there, you need to check the tides for the day and visit during low tide. If you do this, walk the causeway out to the lighthouse but listen for the alarm that signals when the tide is changing and it’s time to head back.

Mount Orgueil Castle

Mount Orgueil Castle

This castle is seriously cool. It’s one of the biggest ones I’ve been able to go into. It’s been standing tall over Jersey for over 600 years. It has acted as the first line of defense against the French and has also served as a prison for spies. Visiting the entire castle will take about an hour as there are several rooms to get lost in and discover! Make sure to climb all the way to the top for stunning views of Gorey Pier (and on a clear day France).

Champagne and Oyster Tours

Oyster Beds

Take a guided tour to the Seymour Oyster beds as the tides go out into the sea. Watch as rows and rows of oyster beds are uncovered. Taste fresh Jersey oysters and listen to your guide discuss the area and natural wildlife. Sip on refreshing champagne while taking in the stunning views of the area.

What to Eat

Did you know that Jersey has an excellent food scene? No? Neither did I.

When you visit Jersey you’ll discover that the food there is absolutely incredible. From the fresh seafood, to Jersey Royals (potatoes), and more, you definitely won’t leave hungry!

The Hungry Man

The Hungry Man

An island break isn’t complete without enjoying a meal beside the sea! Head over to Rozel Bay and dig into a tasty burger or fresh crab sandwich. Enjoy your meal al fresco at one of the many picnic tables that overlooks the sea. Enjoy your meal as locals walk by with their dogs.

Feast

Dig into a piece of fresh fish at Feast. I suggest ordering the Baked Cod. It is so good, probably the best baked cod I have ever had! Feast is located next to Gorey Pier.

Nude Food

Food doesn’t always have to be fussy and if you don’t have a ton of time and are looking for a quick bite, head to Nude Food. There are a few locations scattered around the island but I ate at the one located in St. Helier. It was incredible. It’s a healthy choice for lunch — the sweet potato bowl was so fresh and filling!

The Square

I love a restaurant that knows what it’s good at making. And The Square definitely knows what’s up! Enjoy a piece of steak or some BBQ here and your taste buds will thank you. I also indulged in some mussels and the sauce that was used was absolutely perfect. You can find The Square in St. Helier.
