24 Hours at Sukhothai

Sukhothai
I recently spent a little less than 24 hours at Sukhothai and it was incredible. I wasn’t sure if I would have enough time, but it was actually perfect.

Visiting Sukhothai

I arrived in the late afternoon on Saturday, which allowed me to have time to visit the main park (central) that evening. My accommodations were booked in Old Sukhothai (at Old Boutique House) on purpose so that I wouldn’t have to pay for a songthaew each way. I rented a bicycle for 50 baht for two days and it was the best choice I could have made.

Entry to each section of the park is 100 baht plus 10 baht for bicycle entry. I think it was totally worth it as there were maybe 30 – 50 people in the entire park. As all of you know, I am always taking photos and it is so frustrating to me when people walk in my frame or when there are so many tourists around that its almost impossible to get a good shot–that was not even close to being the case in Sukhothai. And I rarely had to wait for anyone to move, and when I did, I only had to wait about 3 minutes. I even danced around in front of my GoPro and no one witnessed it haha…

Some History

Founded around 1238, the Sukhothai Kingdom lasted until around 1347. It is one of the oldest kingdoms in Thailand. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Park. The park is made up of 3 sections- North, Central, and West. As I mentioned earlier, there are a 100 baht + 10 baht for bicycle entry fee at each section — as far as I know, there is no joint ticket. The tickets are also for the day only.

If you arrive on a Saturday, you’ll be able to stay at the park until around 9 pm. I ventured into Central around 5:30, rode my bike throughout the park and stopped to take photos. Plus, I was there for the sunset and was also there to see the park lit up (which only happens on Saturday evenings).

I was able to see all of Central on Saturday evening and I woke up early on Sunday and was able to see West and North. It was a lot, and it’s very hot, but it’s completely doable in my opinion.

Sukhothai

The only complaint I could have about Old Sukhothai was that the food was extremely overpriced. I am not one to complain about these things usually, but all of the restaurants had the exact same menu and it was around 50 – 80 baht for a dish (rice and pork, fried rice, pad thai, Sukhothai noddles).
