10 Things to Do in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai

I traveled to Chiang Mai A LOT over the past five months. It became my second home in Thailand because it was the closest “major” city to where I was living. Because of that, I was able to do a lot of different things there. Here are 10 Things to do in Chiang Mai:

10 Things To Do In Chiang Mai, Thailand

1. Walk up a waterfall.

Venture to the “Sticky” Waterfall. The surface of the rocks are sticky, not slippery, which allows you to walk all the way up the waterfall!

2. Hang out with some Elephants.

There are several places that you can spend the day with elephants. DO your RESEARCH. Make sure you’re only supporting programs that truly take care of the elephants that they have. I recommend Elephant Discovery Chiang Mai.

3. Head to the Saturday Night Market.

The Saturday night market is a big deal here! Make sure to stop in and buy some traditional Thai goods as well as those elephant pants you see everyone wearing all over SE Asia.

4. Jump into the Grand Canyon.

Rent a motorbike or get a crew to jump into a songthaew so you can spend the afternoon cliff jumping in the manmade quarry known as the “Grand Canyon.” Its truly beautiful… if you decide to jump into the water holding your GoPro, make sure its attached to you…

5. Get a massage.

Enjoy a relaxing morning or afternoon with a Thai Massage. There are places all over the city that boast the “best Thai massage.” You generally can’t go wrong when picking a place. Prepare to be amazed at how relaxed you can be.

6. Zipline through the jungle.

Spend the day zipping over rice fields and through the jungle. There are also a ton of places that you can do this in Chiang Mai, but I had the best time at Eagle Track Zipline… Their staff was incredible and it was a real rush!

7. Party at Zoe in Yellow.

A trip to Chiang Mai is not complete without a drink at the backpacker spot, Zoe’s. One drink will turn into a massive bucket and the next thing you know you’ll be dancing the night away… Or until 12 AM when the bars close…

8. Catch the sunrise at Doi Suthep.

This temple is on a mountain just outside of Chiang Mai. The view of the city below is absolutely stunning and I’ve heard that its even better at sunrise. Make sure you head over there early as a lot of people do this!

9. Take a cooking class.

Chiang Mai is known for its cooking classes. A friend of mine just did one and cooked five courses! Everything looked absolutely delicious… Plus, you can whip out these recipes when you return home and show your family and friends what you know about Thai cooking.

Chiang Mai has a delicious variety of western food. Try Salsa Kitchen for Mexican, Birds Nest Cafe for breakfast and Fresh&Wraps Restobar for sandwiches, salads and wraps.
